There are plenty of ways to build a backyard ADU in the Bay Area. Prefab units can be fast. Pre-approved plans can feel efficient. But when homeowners have specific needs, strong aesthetics, and a long-term vision for how they want to live, a custom ADU becomes a different category altogether.
This East Bay Area backyard ADU in Pleasant Hill, a detached 749 SF home, was designed for a couple in their 50s who wanted something very specific: a calm, refined retreat that supports togetherness and personal space—now and in the decades ahead. Before we drew anything, we mapped daily routines and identified the small “friction points” that quietly shape how a home feels.
A Great Room made for gathering
The heart of the home is an airy Great Room – with open sightlines, generous circulation, and a kitchen that feels integrated and is well-suited to gathering and entertaining rather than tucked away.

Two suites, built for flexibility
Personal space was not treated as a luxury add-on, but as a quality-of-life essential. Besides the common area (great room), We planned the ADU as two suite-like zones, including a flexible office that typically serves as the wife’s studio and activity room, and can easily double as a guest room. Long-term, it may also be converted for caretaker’s use—so the home can evolve as their needs change.
Storage, daylight, and thermal comfort work together
The plan also prioritizes storage, daylight, and thermal performance—and each decision supports the next. A full wall of storage along the north-facing side maximizes capacity, keeps the home visually calm, and adds insulation. Along the south-facing wall, generous glazing brings in daylight, paired with a calibrated roof overhang that welcomes winter sun while reducing summer heat gain. The result: a brighter home that feels comfortable season after season.
Japandi Style, tailored for real life
The overall aesthetic is quiet, elegant, and intentional. We use warm wood tones, minimalistic detailing, and soft curves that keep the architecture feeling gentle. Natural light is treated like a “material” that finishes the space, creating that tranquil serenity you feel immediately when you walk into the room.
Designed for aging in place, from day one
In a small footprint, every surface matters – that is where interior design-led ADU planning changes the outcome. This home was designed for aging in place from day one: walk-in showers, space for grab bars and safety measures, wide, clear pathways, open spaces, and easy indoor-outdoor connection. These decisions are best made and integrated into the design process early on rather than retrofitted later, and delivering a project with that level of tailoring and consideration is the part that we enjoy the most about our design process!
